Endometriosis affects approximately 10% of women of reproductive age and is one of the most common causes of chronic pelvic pain and infertility. For decades, hormonal treatment options have been limited by side effects, particularly bone loss and vasomotor symptoms associated with hypoestrogenism.
The EMA has recently authorised a new oral GnRH receptor antagonist. Unlike classical GnRH agonists, this drug acts immediately without an initial flare-up effect and allows dose adjustment to maintain oestrogen levels in the low premenopausal range.
Advantages over previous treatments
Phase III clinical trials showed a significant reduction in dysmenorrhoea and dyspareunia, with a superior tolerability profile compared to GnRH analogues. Bone mineral density loss was minimal and reversible. Its daily oral administration also improves therapeutic adherence.
